At their first public demonstration in Paris in 1839, photographs seemed nothing short of miraculous in their ability to record a mirror image of actuality. Their expressive views, seemingly objective win ­ dows onto a remote past, were never far removed from contemporary concerns. Early photographs reveal as much about the photographers' sensibilities and the social milieu in which their aesthetic and scientific responses were shaped as it does about antiquity itself.
